Healing Dreams

Written on the 10th of March 2010 by Don Tolman

Some people say, “I never dream” but a person who actually does not dream simply does not exist. Rapid eye motion (REM) studies show that everyone dreams, regardless of age, sex, race, and so on. To say, “I don’t dream” is actually to say, “I habitually ignore and forget my dream experiences.” All warm-blooded creatures dream regularly – REMs have been observed throughout the animal world.

Prolonged dream deprivation tends to cause severe mental disorientation and emotional upset. Apparently, if the unconscious is deprived of its normal outlets in REM sleep, it demands “its due” and causes people to hallucinate and “dream while awake.” Clearly, the dream is a natural phenomenon. It is part of and necessary for the maintenance of natural physical, mental, and emotional health and balance within the organism.

Just as there is no such thing as a person who doesn’t dream, there is also no such thing as a dream with only one meaning – all dreams have multiple meanings, much like puns or parable. At one level, all our dreams are always dreaming about the physical condition of our bodies at the moment of the dream. At yet other levels, our dreams are invariably concerned with recent memories (“day residue”), childhood and adolescent reminiscences, sexual desires and fears, religious intuitions, the complexities of emotional relationship (or the lack of it), desires for power and competence, synchronous intuitions, other subtle perceptions, and more.

Dreams always come in the service of wholeness. They come to correct imbalances in waking attitudes, emotions, habits, and behaviours, and to bring to light the energies for growth and change that have not yet reached conscious self-awareness by other means. Even when our conscious awareness is hostile to and fearful of the corrections brought by dreams, the dreams themselves will continue to bring their healing messages of wholeness, and the possibilities for increasing wholeness in waking life. Indeed, if they are thwarted by forgetfulness, inattention, or even conscious repression they will tend to take on increasingly horrific and “nightmarish” forms until you are forced to at least remember them upon awakening. In this way, nightmarish dreams will at least impress consciousness with seriousness and get past the repression that often makes us forget dreams whose message we are not ready to heed.
