Everywhere I look these days, I see people glued to their smartwatches, tracking steps, heart rate, sleep cycles, and calories. We’ve become obsessed with data, constantly checking in on our stats. And don’t get me wrong, wearables can be helpful tools. But it’s got me thinking: Are we outsourcing our health awareness to technology and ignoring the signals our bodies have been giving us for centuries?

I’ve spent years teaching people how to tune into their own biology using the Tolman Method, which incorporates ancient practices like face mapping, iridology, sclerology, and tongue diagnosis. These systems are powerful diagnostic tools that can detect imbalances years before a smartwatch ever could. Your body is constantly speaking to you. The question is, are you listening? And do you know how to read the signs?

Face Mapping and How Your Skin Reflects Internal Health

One of the most overlooked indicators of health is the face. The appearance of someone’s skin is often focused on from a beauty perspective, but it’s also a window into your internal health. The ancient method of face mapping, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, teaches us that every part of the face corresponds to an internal organ.

If you’re experiencing frequent breakouts, dryness, or puffiness, this is a sign that your body is trying to get your attention. Your forehead is connected to digestion and the small intestine, while the area between your brows is linked to liver health. Dark circles under the eyes? Your kidneys might need some extra support. Acne along the jawline is often tied to hormonal imbalances.

Body Wisdom | Read the Signs Before Your Smartwatch Does

Rather than covering up blemishes with skincare products, I teach people to look deeper. What is your face really trying to tell you? Addressing these imbalances through proper nutrition, detoxification, and hydration can lead to lasting health improvements. I do all this without the need for an expensive face serum or wearable tech.

Iridology and Sclerology: How Your Eyes Reveal Hidden Imbalances

The eyes are more than just the “windows to the soul”, they hold deep insights into your body’s health. Iridology is the study of the iris, where different patterns, colors, and fibers reveal strengths and weaknesses in the body. Meanwhile, sclerology examines the whites of the eyes (sclera), detecting inflammation, toxicity, and organ stress.

I’ve seen time and again how these methods predict health issues long before they show up in conventional tests. A brown discoloration in the iris? That might signal liver stress. Bloodshot sclera? Your body could be overloaded with toxins. If your eyes are consistently yellowish, this may be an early warning sign of liver dysfunction.

People often tell me, “Tyler, my smartwatch doesn’t tell me any of this!” And that’s exactly my point. Your body has its own built-in health tech. It just takes learning how to read it.

Tongue Diagnosis: What the Color, Texture, and Coating of Your Tongue Say About Your Health

If you’ve ever woken up and noticed a white coating on your tongue, cracks, or a bright red tip, your body is trying to communicate with you. In the Tolman Method, I emphasize the importance of tongue diagnosis, a practice used for centuries in Ayurveda and TCM to assess internal health.

A thick white coating often signals excessive mucus and digestive stagnation, while a cracked tongue might indicate malabsorption of nutrients. If your tongue is pale, you may be dealing with poor circulation or anemia. A deep red tip? That’s often a sign of high stress and excessive heat in the body.

Instead of waiting for a wearable device to notify you of an imbalance, take a look in the mirror every morning and check your tongue. It’s one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to stay ahead of your health.

Body Wisdom | Read the Signs Before Your Smartwatch Does

Nail Health and How Fingernails Indicate Nutrient Deficiencies

Your fingernails are another key diagnostic tool that reveal internal imbalances. Many people don’t realize that the shape, texture, and color of their nails are direct reflections of their nutrient status and organ function.

Brittle nails? You could be low in silica or calcium. White spots? That’s often a sign of zinc deficiency. Spoon-shaped nails might indicate iron deficiency, while dark streaks could be linked to adrenal exhaustion or circulatory issues.

Rather than taking a generic supplement and hoping for the best, I teach people to read their nails as a real-time reflection of what’s happening inside and adjust their diet accordingly.

Are Smartwatches Making Us Less Intuitive About Our Health?

There’s no doubt that wearables provide useful data, but can they create a false sense of security? We start to rely on numbers rather than intuition, waiting for an app to tell us how we feel instead of listening to our own body’s signals.

Your smartwatch might measure your heart rate, but it won’t tell you why your heart is under stress. It might track your sleep patterns, but it won’t explain why you’re waking up exhausted every morning. These are things you need to uncover by understanding your body, not just looking at a screen.

The real issue? Tech wearables track symptoms, whereas The Tolman Method that I teach and share helps you find the root cause.

How to Start Listening to Your Body Instead of Relying on Technology

If you feel disconnected from your body, it’s time to relearn its language. You can start here!

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a Go-Go-Go type of person that can’t sit still for very long. I love it! It makes me feel so alive being energetic and ready to pounce on fun activities or tasks.

However, over time this led me to feel burnt out. I’d be full of beans but then crash at 3pm. I’d pick up again at about 6pm, then stay awake until midnight… I needed to find something to help as I started to learn my adrenals were getting hammered! I was burning out. I used caffeine as some form of band-aid to help energy levels. But we know that doing that makes the problem worse.

So I turned to meditation. But you can imagine, for an undiagnosed ADD guy like me, sitting still and looking inwards was challenging. I knew meditation would help improve my scattered attention, nervous system, focus and concentration. But along the way, I also discovered many other benefits like keeping my digestion running smoothly, maintaining a consistent level of energy during the day and improving my relationships by being an active listener. Safe to say I’m investing more time in this expansive practice.

In the beginning, I had no idea what I was supposed to do, let alone if I was doing it correctly (there are apps that teach you “how”, so no worries there). But I set myself a challenge to meditate every day for a week. After a week I noticed I was less reactive and more proactive. I was able to think more clearly and respond more effectively. I also noticed that my sleep was deeper, more restorative and I was changing my habit! I wanted to go to bed earlier (this was HUGE for me).

But the biggest lesson that I’ve taken away – Meditation puts you into the para-sympathetic system. The ‘rest and digest’ state. This is the place you need to be to heal things. To recover from things. To process things. The best part of being in the para-sympathetic nervous system is the feeling of knowing you are still energetic without the ‘Go-Go-Go’ energy from an adrenaline place. To finally have some real earth grounding energy that doesn’t rely on my mind to motivate me or need caffeine to trigger the start of the day. I like to call this the “calm as a Hindu Cow state”.

When should you Meditate?

I like first thing in the morning as you wake up, or when I get home from work in the mid afternoon. The reason to meditate then and not before bed is so you can receive the benefits while still being awake for the day or evening until sleep! Try it!

Keen to give it a ‘Go’? Here are my top tips for getting started:

• Make a “Meditation Happening” sign for your bedroom door or meditation space. This will minimise interruptions!

• Turn that phone OFF!!!! Or at least on silent or vibrate so there are no interruptions. Trust me. You don’t want a random notification interrupting as you go deeper into the time you’ve committed to.

• Sit upright on a chair or bed. Don’t lie down. Sitting on a pillow can help relax into the 20 minutes you are dedicating to yourself, and against something to support your back. My comfortable space is just a couch.

• Use a guided meditation in the beginning. There are so many fantastic apps, I’ve listed some of my favourites below. Once you’ve got the hang of it, you can give it a try on your own – no music, just you and your thoughts.

• Set a timer. When you’re new to meditation, you will be surprised how quick the time goes! And learn to resist the temptation to check how long you’ve got left. After plenty of practice, remove the timer and see where your thoughts take you.

• Remember, it’s a practice, not a perfect! Be kind to yourself, it’s ok not to be great at it. Like everything, you will improve with practice.

Check out this list of some of my favourite meditation and mindfulness apps. If you’re new to meditation, it’s a great place to start.

One Giant Mind
This is the one I’ve most resonated with as it’s consistent with using the same music and teachers. This allows or let’s you know if any big differences in your meditation happens, that it’s not the music or teachers. It’s me. This is a simple easy-to-follow program and you can expand when you are ready. This app really allows you to start slow to become comfortable and then dives deeper into meditation when you are ready.

Headspace

This app teaches the basics of mindfulness and meditation through cute animations. The free version gives you 10 days worth of guided meditations, each of which can be tailored to suit how much time you can spare. You also get some mini meditations and breathing exercises. A monthly subscription will unlock hours of extra content with topics covering everything from productivity to pain management.

Calm

Calm features a range of voice-led meditation exercises and soothing sounds from ocean waves to crackling firewood. A seven-day beginner’s program will get you started, covering basic mindful breathing exercises in short sessions. A subscription features a library of calming music and lulling sleep stories, plus masterclasses for more advanced practitioners.

Aura

Aura features short meditations – no longer than 15 minutes each. The sessions change daily and are delivered by mindfulness teachers and therapists, with the ability to save your favourite ones. The paid version will unlock more than 1000 meditations and additional features such as the “daily reflection” field where you can log your feelings and the things you’re grateful.

Insight Timer

This app fuses meditation and social networking. In addition to an extensive library of guided meditation, a world map shows you how many people are meditating and where they are. You can also add friends and discuss mindfulness topics in the groups feature. The meditation range from beginner to advanced levels, as well as short courses focused on topics such as breathing and anxiety management. The best part? It’s all free.

Smiling Mind

Another free app, Smiling Mind makes mindfulness accessible to everyone. With a simple design, its very user-friendly. It offers introductory sessions for beginners through to tailored programs for various ages (kids included).

Here’s to a new path of health that adds enormous value to yourself and how you go about your life!

I am often approached by people who have digestive issues and wonder if it’s safe to do a colon cleanse

What About if I Have Blockages or Colon Damage?

Firstly, what I would say is if you have a digestive issue that includes any blockages then it is REALLY important to take it slow. Especially if there has been any damage to the colon. In fact, I always recommend people with major digestive issues to do the 30 day colon cleanse process rather than the 4 day process. Taking 1 or 2 tablespoons of the colon cleanse mix every day for 30 days is still going to bulk things up enough to get some really good cleansing going on for you.

I would also highly recommend eating oatmeal every day. Get yourself some good quality organic oats – I like the steel cut oats but any kind that aren’t “instant oats” are great because they are less processed. Eating a bowl of oatmeal every day will add more good fibre into your system.  And buy yourself some mission figs – oh my god they taste so good! Figs or dates or prunes especially are great – they have very specific fibres and sugars that help the body’s natural digestive action to clean things out. If you want to boost up your protein intake you could add some hemp seeds to your oatmeal as well and if you want it a bit sweeter, add some honey.

Hydrating with Fruit

ANY fruit will be super hydrating to the digestive system. I typically recommend starting the day with fresh fruit first, even before you eat your oatmeal. Maybe even before you have your serve of colon cleanse, because the fruit will hydrate everything and get things “sliding” along and moving!

Apples are going to be the best choice for digestive function. But ALL fruit will hydrate the digestive system, give you some good enzymes, clean some things out, ferment some things that aren’t meant to be there and just get everything to move along.

If you can implement some form of intermittent fasting too that would be fantastic because it gives everything a break. So even if that just looks like waiting until 10am to have some fruit. Then have a serving of colon cleanse at 10.30-11am.

To really amp things up you could do a serve of colon cleanse in the afternoon as well! If you don’t like the taste of the colon cleanse by itself then you could definitely put it into your oatmeal, it will just bulk it up. You probably won’t even notice the taste at all!

Why You Should Make Friends With Salad

During this cleansing process, if you can eat super plant based for the whole 30 days then that would definitely be really helpful. And if you could eat 100% RAW plant based then that would be even better! If you have ever seen some of the videos of the salads I have made – amazing! And just making these salads makes me feel so good; every time I am boosting up greens I feel strong. I can feel the extra energy and power!

If you feel like you need a snack in the afternoon – try things like carrot sticks and celery. Celery is a great broom for the digestive system. When you eat celery you’ve probably noticed you end up with this ball of fibre you are trying to swallow! If you can eat 2-3 sticks of celery then that’s like colon cleansing all by itself.

Fasting for Optimal Healing

If you are dealing with a major digestive issue like a twisted colon, once you finish up your 30 days of colon cleansing, then honestly healing is going to need to include some form of extended water fasting. I know lots of people have healed their digestive conditions, and typically it takes 20-30 days to have a complete healing. That length of water fasting can be pretty full on and I wouldn’t recommend anyone do that without someone with experience monitoring you, such as a Tolman Health Coach.

Without professional assistance I would recommend trying 10-15 days on a water fast and see how you go. If you can make time for that. Water fasting requires 100% commitment so you can’t be going to work, you need to put all your focus on your healing. Once you have done some water fasting, do equal that time with juices and you are probably going to be in a really good place. You can add in things like clear vegetable broths and herbal teas while you are juice fasting too!

Coffee Enemas for the Win!

Throughout this process, whether you are fasting or not, I recommend you do daily enemas – I like to do them in the morning. Coffee enemas are super healing. Doing them in the morning will wake you up and get you going! The coffee detoxifies your liver so you will feel really good. And the whites of your eyes clear up pretty quickly from doing coffee enemas.

Just make sure you are using good, pristine, organic, fresh roasted coffee. Grind it yourself, brew it yourself and then use it in the enema straight away. The coffee is also going to stimulate the lining of the colon for healing and action and movement.

So my suggested protocol for colon cleansing with digestive issues would look like 30 days of 1-2 servings of colon cleanse, eating lots of (preferably raw) healthy food to just clean everything out and then going into a fast of 10-15 days on water and after that an equal amount of time on juice.

Once you have finished the fasting, break your fast with things like coconut yoghurt, berries and honey. Keeping it fresh with fruits! Keep that up for about a week then you can start incorporating some steamed vegetables and things like that.

Then moving back into a healthier lifestyle is obviously ideal.

I’ve written before in another blog about the endless benefits of using essential oils. And these apply for our kids as well. But I guess the added benefit for using essential oils to help our kiddos is that you already have them on hand. No need to wait for a doctor’s appointment (for then a likely pharmaceutical prescription).

When our little ones are unwell, with the snuffles or a headache, or just feeling a bit restless at bedtime, as a parent, it’s nice to know that shelf-ful of natural remedies is at your fingertips to help ease and heal your child.

Applying with Care

It is important to make sure you are aware of the best way to apply essential oils to kids though. While these precautions also apply to adults, children have more sensitive skin (and more so the younger they are), so you want to ensure you are being extra careful and safe.

There are some essential oils that are considered ‘hot’, which due to their higher potency can cause a warm or hot sensation on the skin, with also the risk of burning* if not diluted correctly. These oils need to always be diluted and I would also highly recommend doing a patch test before use.

Some hot oils include peppermint, cinnamon, lemongrass and oregano. Young Living do a great job of putting child-proof caps on their hot essential oils, making them easy to identify.

*As we know from home economics, water and oil do not go together. If a hot or burning sensation arises, use another oil, such as olive oil or jojoba, to dilute the applied essential oil to help ease the burning feeling.

When applying essential oils, another thing to consider is if they are ‘photosensitive’, causing our skin to be extra sensitive to the sun. It’s not to say you can use these oils at all, you’ll just need to stay out of the sun for a while (3-6 hours, some may require more time depending on skin sensitivity) after application.

The main culprits of causing sun sensitivity are all the citrus essential oils; Lemon, Orange, Bergamot… Always check the labels to see if that oil, or oil blend requires you to avoid the sun for awhile.

Preparing for Application

With essential oils, whether we are diffusing them or applying them topically, they need to be diluted due to being highly concentrated. This is especially important for the little ones.

‘Staple’ Oils to Have on Hand

Kids are kids… while they are all unique in their own little ways, they all tend to go through the same stuff at some point. Here are some great essential oils to have on hand that can be used regularly, together, and for various reasons.

Obviously, for all oils that are being applied topically these need to be diluted, so making these into rollerballs makes for easy application, but also easy for the kids to get involved and do it themselves (under supervision, of course).

Lavender – A great calming oil to help send little ones to sleep. Diffuse or add it topically to the hands, feet and wrist. This oil is also great for bug bites.

Tea Tree – An antibacterial for all those cuts and scrapes on an active kid. Add topically to the site.

Young Living Thieves – An allrounder that supports the immune system for all the pesky germs kids attract. Apply under the feet for best absorption. Also, great diffused, as it neutralises and purifies the air from strong odours.

Eucalyptus – When the cold season hits this is great for the coughs and congestion, in fact it’s a great oil to use for respiratory health in general. Another great one to diffuse, and then the whole family can benefit, or apply it to the chest and feet (remember to dilute!). Also great to inhale through a steamer to help break up congestion.

Copaiba – This little gem, while it supports overall health and boosting the immune system, when used topically with any other oil, also helps to improve the absorption of oils through the skin, thereby improving their efficacy. And that’s what we want for our little ones when they are unwell, right? As mentioned before to use topically, it’s also great diffused to reap the many health benefits.

These are just a few of some great ‘staple’ essential oils to have around for the kids, but if you are ever in doubt about ensuring you are diluting correctly, Young Living actually has a whole product range of kids oils. This range includes some extremely useful essential oil blends that are already diluted appropriately for kids.

Essential oils are such a beneficial natural healing tool for everybody, but how amazing is it to introduce this protocol to our kids while they are young. Not only because they will reap the rewards of these oils for their health (in multiple ways), but it’s a great education for them to carry on into their growing years.

When you think about it, I mean really think about it, we are surrounded by toxins. And maybe the thought of that is too overwhelming so we block it out. Or maybe it’s just unknown, because how can companies get away with continuing to sell products with such harmful chemicals, right?

From the foods we are eating, to the soaps we wash our bodies with, to the cleansers we use to clean our homes…and everything in between. Toxic chemicals are everywhere. Seriously, check out the ingredient lists for all that you are using and start researching what those ingredients are.

Our bodies have a great natural immune system to fight illnesses (which these chemical contribute to), but it can only do and take so much. And when our body is getting overloaded with toxins, we start to see the affect of this in some form of disease. And now it takes the hard, long work to detox from these toxins… Doable? Yes. But even better if we can be proactive to prevent this from getting to that stage.

How Chemicals Affect Your Health

I encourage you to really starting looking at the ingredients listed in the cleaning products you are using in your home. I mean, if you can’t pronounce the ingredient, you probably shouldn’t be cleaning your home with it.

When these toxic cleaning products touch our skin, or even just linger in the air in our home, these chemicals get into our system…and over time can be major contributors to disease within the body.

The ingredients you’ll see listed can cause cancer, disrupt hormones, respiratory issues, skin rashes, liver and kidney abnormalities, lymphatic issues, and this is to name a few. I don’t want to scare you, but these are some serious side-effects that have come from our household cleaning products.

Best Oils for Cleaning

There are many essential oils that are amazing, and effective, to create your own natural cleaning products. Here are a few that are multi-functional within the home (medicinally also) that are perfect to get you started.

With a few other staple natural products and these essential oils, you’ll have your home clean and healthy in no time.

Lemon Essential Oil
This oil is probably the most versatile of them all, and well known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties making for an effective cleaner. The clean and fresh odour that lingers when you are finished is just the icing on the cake.

Tea Tree (Melaluca) Essential Oil
With its antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, Tree Tree essential oil makes for a great cleaner, particularly in the bathroom.

Toilet Cleaner: ¼ cup vinegar, ½ cup baking soda, 10 drops Tea Tree essential oil. Mix everything together.

Lavender Essential Oil
While Lavender essential oil boasts antibacterial properties, making it ideal for cleaning the nasties around the house, it’s best known for its calming properties. It’s also a great odour eliminator, so spraying it around the house and on your linens as an air freshener is win/win.

Air Freshener: 1 ½ – 2 cups distilled water, 1 tablespoon baking soda, 6 drops Lavender essential oil. Stir soda and oils together, put into spray bottle and add water.

Orange Essential Oil
Similar to Lemon, Orange essential oil is a cleaning all-rounder, particularly great at cutting through grease in the kitchen. And it smells amazing too!

All-Purpose Cleaner: ¾ cup white vinegar, ¾ cup distilled water, ¾ tablespoon baking soda, 30 drops orange essential oil (or 15 drops orange + 15 drops lemon). Mix everything into a spray bottle.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil
This oil has highly effective antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties making it a strong fighter against germs that cause colds and flus. It’s also great at fighting mold and mildew.

Mold & Mildew Cleaner: 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup distilled water, 5 drops Eucalyptus essential oil. Mix everything into a spray bottle.

Young Living Thieves

As you know, I’m a Young Living supporter so needless to say I love their Thieves range of household products. This option is a great alternative if you are not into making your own cleaning products.

Thieves oil itself is a Young Living blend of essential oils, that is a medicinal power house on its own. Young Living has then used this oil blend to create an amazing plant-based cleaning product range using natural ingredients.

Products are purchased as a concentrate, so you can alter the strength depending on what you need to clean and they last longer.

Making your own natural cleaning products is not only healthier for you and your family, but it’s easy and less expensive. And it couldn’t be any easier with the copious amount of information and recipes on the internet.

It may feel a little overwhelming at first, but it will be so worth it and you’ll feel fantastic that you are creating a much healthier, non-toxic space.

First thing I would say, I know I say this a lot, when you do a fast you are going to reduce inflammation, but what happens is your body becomes very open to change.

Specifically speaking about the cervical spine, with special mention about C1, and the physical, emotional and spiritual changes that we can implement to help the spine heal.

Fasting for the Spine

I worked with a chiropractor with clinics all over Bali, and she would say (with other chiropractors saying the same thing) that when people were fasting at the time she did spinal adjustments, people would have issues that would move super quickly. So someone with scoliosis, while on my 21 day fasting program, we found that within 10 days the spine is correcting itself.

And the chiropractor would say that normally, treatment for 6 months of 3 times a week, there would be hardly any movement. Yet we’re seeing more movement within 10 days of a fasting program.

So maybe going to an osteopath or chiropractor and fasting while having this work done would be a great approach. But then we also need to realise that the spine is out of place because of lifestyle choices – mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically.

Movement and Strengthening

At least three times a week, I’m online with a group of people going through an advanced process call the Ancient Egyptian Physical Culture. This is a series of movements that moves the lymphatic waste products out of every aspect of my body (ankles, knees, hips, etc.). I’m opening and clearing, essentially cleaning out. During this session, we are playing music, dancing and having fun.

But there is a specific routine that is strengthening my body and it’s making me more flexible. In this process of strengthening, we’ve got two big muscles down our spine… imagine your vertebrae of your spine running down the center of these muscles. When I’m doing these simple exercises that increase the strength of the muscles around my spine, that is what holds my spine in place.

If you’re not doing some form of yoga or pilates, sport, or some simple walking or hiking, the spinal muscles start to get weak and the spine starts to go out of place. It’s a major factor.

We need to make sure physically we are doing all the right things. Then we can look at the energetics. The seven vertebrae of the spine, C1 specifically, I believe is related to the pre-frontal cortex. If you are the type of person who just thinks all the time, drinking coffee and on the go, the spinal column, 33 vertebrae, are the switch boards of the electrical energy that is floating through the body.

So if I am overwhelmingly using some part of the body, too much energy, we want the right balance. You don’t want low energy and you don’t want high energy, you want balanced energy. It’s the whole ying and yang, hot and cold, positive and negative…

If I’m too much in the pre-frontal cortex, then I’m going to be constantly flicking off C1 and probably C2. And develop a level of things going on back there – toxicity can be a factor, mental issues.

The Emotional Connection

In my book [on emotional healing], C1 says, ‘feelings of fear, confusion, fight or flight.’ That’s what I’m talking about – fight or flight and not knowing how to get out. Every time you go for a drive, you’re pissed off and fighting everybody, cutting through traffic or people are just pissing you off.

To get out of the sympathetic nervous system and coming into the parasympathetic nervous system, there are some simple things you can do to be more relaxed. We are either in ‘fight or flight’ or we’re in ‘rest and digest’. When we are resting, our body is digesting food and we are healing, the parasympathetic.

When we are in the sympathetic, we are looking for coffee, Red Bull, cocaine…or just stressed out. That’s when it’s adrenaline and things are taken away from the digestive, healing function.

One way we can get rid of that is simple breathing. Take an in-breath, stop, then in-breath again  and relax it out. Repeat for about a minute and you’ll be going into the sympathetic nervous system, relaxation, the body starts to heal.

I like to effectuate my vagus nerve. I do it all the time. It’s just a natural thing that I do… It’s just kind of toning. What I do is I hum while I’m driving, under the music so no one can hear me. It calms my nervous system.

Again, back to the emotional book for spine –  fight or flight, wanting to run away from your problems, responsibilities, feeling insecure, not good enough, too focused on other people’s opinions.

The neck also, in general, I believe, is my ability to see. So, every day in the physical culture I’m doing advanced neck mobility exercises. I’m stretching the neck in ALL directions, so I always have really good neck flexibility and mobility. So I can whip my neck around really fast, there’s no knots, no hard spots.

As mentioned, three times a week I’m going through that movement series. I’d recommend you guys join me – it’s a subscription you can join called Morning Rituals. We do it on Australian mornings. It’s available five days a week, but I’m actually doing it live three days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

That’s a bit about C1, and like I said, with the neck, it’s the ability to see the perspective. For example, if I have pain in the left side of my neck, I have an inability to see the feminine perspective. When a woman says something to me, I just can’t see her perspective, we have an argument…I have a pain in the left side of my neck. Totally legit. And it might be underlying stuff where it builds up over time.

Right side of the next, inability to see the male perspective. These are also issues, inability to see, from that perspective.

And there is specifics with each one of the vertebrae. The middle spine, thoracic, is more about feeling emotional supported or being stuck in all the shit from the past. All the stuff that is on my back from the past – 10 years ago, 3 years ago, 2 weeks ago, yesterday. Stuck in all the shit back there, carrying the weight of the world on my back.

A lot of times what we shoulder, if you’re shouldering too much responsibility, masculine (right) or feminine (left), then we’ll have shoulder issues – pain and dislocations, etc. I’ve had my share of injuries through the years from extreme sports, and with every injury, every time, it was exactly related to some other emotional stuff that was going on in my life at the time.

There’s all these specific details (emotional connections) for each vertebrae, and my coaches have access to all this information, so they can give you specifics and help you with the remedy of what to go through to clear the emotional stuff.

Lower back, by the way, is typically around fear of not being able to provide financially, constant worry of finance. That is why a lot of men have lower back problems, they are always thinking about money, worried about money and being able to support their family.

It’s all mental – neck, and worry (financial) – lower back.

I’ve helped people with major forms of antipsychotics and antidepressants. Some of these antidepressants are so strong, you try to come off them and it’s a major negative reaction, of which, nearly every single time you’re doing a juice fast.

Juicing Away the Medication

My recommendation is to keep taking the antidepressants, and start a juice fast. Actually you can start with a colon cleanse, then do a juice fast. Typically, after starting a juice fast, maybe 3 or 4, days you can cut your antidepressants by half.

By the time you get to 7 to 10 days into the juice fast, your body is going to receive so much nutrition, so much light and clear so much toxicity out of your body, that you’re most likely be able to quit (antidepressants) and have no reaction what so ever.

Juices are one of the greatest antidepressants.

I generally suggest drinking about 3 litres of juice a day, but if you are really small, 2-2.5 litres will be fine. If you are weighing above 60 kgs, I would recommend the 3 litres a day. Also continue drinking 2-3 litres of water a day.

When Juice Fasting is Done

Getting our mind back in the right state, clearing out the mess inside our digestive system, lymphatic system and brain takes time. And if you have been on antidepressants for a long time, you need to realise that you are going to feel great while you are juice fasting, but when you quit there is going to be a come-down.

You need to be aware that, it’s like ‘oh now I’m coming down, I’m not on juices, maybe I need antidepressants again.’ There is going to be a transition that needs to happen of your lifestyle.

Incorporating juices, fresh fruit and walking on a regular basis. Basically, incorporating the 7 Principles of Health – air, water, sunshine, exercise, whole foods, relationships and passion. Also, coming along to our programs, getting inspired, meeting new people, dedicating your life to these principles and incorporating them into your daily life.

This is what is going to take us completely out of depression and into a situation of letting our lives be full of gratitude, energy, vitality, and finding our mission and passion.

Healing Long Term

If you have been on antidepressants for a long time and you’re getting off of them, I wouldn’t do just enough fasting to get off the medication. I’d do enough fasting to heal and rewire your brain.

So connecting with a Tolman Health Coach would really be ideal because they’ll keep you motivated with exactly what you need to be doing –  wake up, drink water, go for a walk, have your juice, get out in the sun for a certain amount of time… All these little things that kind of need to be brought in to stay on track.

I would also recommend doing 20-30 days of juices minimum to really clear everything out to really see the light and not have to go back onto antidepressants. This is because within about 30 days of a juice fast there are going to be some ‘downloads’ and things that you receive, such as a raise in vibration, that you’ll attract enough into your life that you will not fall back into depression.

When you come off the juices, it’s going to be important to have lots of fresh fruits, yoghurts and rebuild your gut, and keep a really healthy, light diet. And when I say light, I don’t mean little, I mean light as in light and bright. Eat the rainbow, fruits, vegetables, salads, all these sorts of things. Eating lots of it, so you are getting all the calories you need for energy.

Don’t be scared to just load yourself up with fresh fruits in the morning, smoothies, juices throughout the day, veggie snacks, nuts and seeds – go nuts! The reason they are called nuts is because people who are nuts, need nuts because they are healthy for the brain for correcting it.

So in time, getting into the nuts and seeds and the pulses, things from nature, to really strengthen your body, your mind is going to be on point.

When it comes to hemorrhoids, this is something that happens when there is weakness in the muscle, excess build up of stress or acids that causes the sudden expansion of the muscle.

As with healing any condition, it’s important to understand what caused the condition in the first place.

Causes of Hemorrhoids

Typically, the reason why hemorrhoids form is lack of fibre, lack of hydration or the accumulation of some form of toxicity, which can also be from stress.

I believe, that hemorrhoids are formed through the process of pushing. When we sit on the toilet, give a good push, and then some muscles that may be a little bit weak or some issue going on, start to expand causing the hemorrhoids to develop.

Hemmorrhoids Treatment: Natural Healing Protocols

A couple really good remedies, that I actually use a lot, is Frankincense Essential Oil and Myrrh Essential Oil. I mix these oils together creating a super powerful compound.

There is a lot of science about these two essential oils and their ability to activate the immune system, radically reduce inflammation and bring about a situation of healing…awesome stuff.

There’s also a lot of cancer research showing that it causes cancer cell death, called apoptosis. It’s been used in breast cancer, and other types of cancer. I use these oils with clients, taking the oils internally and also applying topically in the location where they have potentially had cancer.

What you would do with the Frankincense and Myrrh is mix it with a carrier oil, such as grapeseed oil, olive oil or coconut oil, not watering down the essential oils too much. Then you want to take the oil on your fingers and massage the hemorrhoid, pressing firmly. The muscle needs to go back into place.

Whether they are internal or external, you really want to consistently put the oil on it everyday, maybe while in the shower or just afterwards. Applying a good amount of pressure may hurt a little bit, but you really want to get those muscles back to place.

I recommend hot baths. I also recommend ice baths, because an ice bath reduces inflammation due to the cold. If you don’t have a bath, you could apply ice or an ice pack directly to the hemorrhoid (if you can reach the location).

Healing from the Inside

Then you need to be aware of is fibre. I suggest going into a high hydration and high fibre diet, because there may be some dehydration going on. Along with not enough fibre from cooked, processed and other types of foods, that is going to prevent further hemorrhoids. In fact, once your digestive system is moving easily, it’s probably going to fix the problem as well.

There’s also going to be a process of learning how to poo. Being in Bali, Indonesia you may know that Balinese toilets are on the ground. And that’s the way we should go to the toilet. We shouldn’t be pushing, we should be squatting. So from standing, to poo you fully sit, bending at the knees to squat with your knees up close to the body.

That opens everything up and allows for the poo to just happen.

So I have been squatting, like Balinese people. If you notice all the Balinese, they are all skinny even though they don’t have the best diet. Most of them are really trim because they know how to poo, eliminate and they are walking around a lot. I put it down to knowing how to defecate effectively.

When you sit down on a toilet, there is actually a band of a muscle that blocks the rectum to some degree, and that can cause constipation. It could be the blocking of this muscle, little bit of constipation already, a little bit of dehydration, not enough fibre causing these muscles to balloon out, causing the hemorrhoids.

Skin health seems like one of those topics that could go on forever. There are so many types, causes, stages of what our skin goes through it is certainly not a ‘one size fits all’ situation, but generally what works… WORKS.

You see our skin works like a map, in the sense of where acne and rashes, or fill in the blank with the name of the skin condition, appear on the body it is actually showing us which internal organs or parts of the body are inflamed and having issues.

In short, whatever your skin is saying on the outside, it’s telling us there is something going on inside, which also needs to be addressed.

So while you are working on the inside, there are some natural steps you can take to ease the symptoms of what you are experiencing on the surface. Taking care to keep away from the chemicals found in most skin remedies, using essential oils is not only natural, they are an effective and delicate way to help heal sensitive skin. (With the right advice and mixtures.)

What is our skin telling us?

Not only is our skin telling us there is some congestion/stress going on inside our bodies, it can be very clever with giving us an indication of where your focus needs to start.

If a condition appears on the face, I can look at the Face Glyphics. This is the understanding that our entire body is a reflex organism, meaning if I have something appearing on my chin, it’s actually a reflex (sign or signal) that there’s a place in my body where there’s some toxicity, blockage, or inflammation.

This is the same for our entire body. If you look at a meridian chart of the body, each area represents an organ and where the skin condition presents is a clue to some stress that needs some TLC.

Essential Oils for Common Skin Conditions

When you’ve identified what exactly the underlying issue is that is causing your skin condition and start the journey to heal internally, essential oils are a great solution to help you to heal from the outside.

Acne
Occurs when pores or hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells which then becomes prime real estate for breeding bacteria, particularly Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria. Acne breakouts can be triggered for various reasons such as hormones, stress, and unhealthy eating habits.

Essential Oils to help:
Rosemary – specifically targets and destroys the acne-causing bacteria P. acnes, damaging the cell walls and ultimately killing the bacterial cells themselves; also contains antibacterial properties.

Thyme – shown to be effective in fighting the bacteria that causes acne, while also soothing to the affected areas.

Oregano – shown to contain the strong antimicrobial activity against P. acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, another major acne-associated bacteria.

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
A group of skin conditions that causes skin to become inflamed or irritated. Eczema can present differently for each person, looking dry, red, or itchy, with flare-ups appearing on different areas of the body. It’s thought that eczema is caused by an overactive immune system, causing an allergic reaction.

Essential Oils to help:
Calendula – contains anti-inflammatory properties when applied to the skin, reducing swelling and pain; also been known to assist with retaining moisture, thereby it’s great for dry skin.

Peppermint – while this oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties, its minty aspect is soothing and cooling, which can ease eczema symptoms.

Patchouli – a great treatment for stress and common mental health issues which can be common triggers for flare-ups.

Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that typically affects skin on the face. It tends to present as small, red, pus-filled bumps on the skin surface during flare-ups. Western medicine would have you believing that the cause and triggers of this skin condition is unknown. But as I’ve mentioned above, referring to the Face Glyph (and trusting your body to know what is going on), it will show the area of your body where you need to put your focus to heal your skin.

Essential Oils to help:
Lavender – contains amazing anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, while also soothing and nourishing to the skin.

Tea Tree – with its anti-microbial properties, this oil can potentially kill irritating bacteria on the skin, making it a powerhouse combo with its anti-inflammatory properties that soothes redness and inflammation.

Geranium – contains antioxidant and astringent properties that gently cleanse the skin, while also containing anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that help soothe redness, swelling and kill bacteria overgrowth that could cause further issues.

The carrier oil you use with any of the above essential oils can make for a great companion. Coconut, jojoba and sunflower carrier oils all add their own health benefits to help in your skin healing journey. Jojoba, specifically, is the closest oil in mimicking the skin’s natural production of sebum oils. Which means jojoba won’t leave a greasy, oily residue on the skin.

Our skin is our largest organ, and commonly referred to as the ‘third kidney’, and one of our body’s channels of elimination through perspiration. So not only do we need to take very good care of it, we also need to listen to it and respect what it is trying to tell us.

The digestive system is basically the engine for your body. It takes in foods, breaks them down, absorbs all the good stuff (nutrients, minerals, etc) and then distributes all the good parts to the rest of your body, getting rid of the waste, to keep it functioning at optimals levels.

So like the engine of a car, if it’s not functioning properly, your car is not going to work efficiently and over time, something is going to eventually break. And then another thing will break, and another. Fixing the individual issues won’t fix the main problem, and eventually the car will no longer function. And, of course, it’s important that you are putting the right things in.

And if you aren’t putting the right products into your car, or putting the right foods into your body, you are going to know about it sooner or later.

Your Digestive System

The journey your food takes through the digestive system starts right at the top of your body, your mouth, working it’s way down through the esophagus to your stomach, intestines, all the way down to the bottom of your body…in a nutshell.

It’s very common to experience digestive problems, from constipation, IBS to more serious concerns such as cancer. As you may know, all disease starts in your gut, as a result of poor nutritional intake, fatigue and impaired immune function. So it’s very important to be on top of your digestive health to ensure these issues don’t lead to bigger issues.

Essential Oils for Your Digestive Health

I talk a lot about whole foods, juicing and cleansing to help to improve and maintain a healthy digestive system. But there are a lot of essential oils that can also be a great tool to supporting your ‘engine’.

Ginger Essential Oil
As I’ve talked about in another blog, ginger is a powerhouse full of health benefits. It’s anti-inflammatory component can assist with any inflammation in the gut, causing constipation, fatigue, acne…the list is endless. Ginger also helps to manage blood sugar levels to support the stomach and speed up the digestion process to help empty the stomach.

Ginger Essential oil can help with a number of digestive issues, such as nausea, gas, diarrhea, motion sickness…to name a few.

Spearmint Essential Oil
Spearmint contains a compound called carvone, naturally found in spearmint, that has been shown to strongly inhibit muscle contractions in the digestive tract, helping to relieve digestive upsets. These upsets include IBS (reducing discomfort), nausea, vomiting, and bloating.

Cumin Essential Oil
Cumin is a warm, nutty spice, most commonly used in Indian dishes. But its most common traditional use was for indigestion. Cumin has been known for increasing digestive enzyme activity, speeding up the digestion process. It can also increase the release of bile from the liver, which helps the digestion of fats and certain nutrients in the gut.

Cumin essential oil can also help with digestive discomfort, nausea, bloating, and constipation.

Fun Fact: In ancient Egyptian civilization, cumin was used as a spice and as a preservative in the mummification process.

Using Essential Oils to Relieve Digestion Issues

The most effective way to benefit from using the above oils to assist and support your digestive system is to apply 1-3 drops into a carrier oil (coconut or jojoba) to your abdomen and massage onto stomach in a clockwise direction (natural direction of digestion).

But that’s not to say you can’t put some drops into a diffuser to then also benefit from the lovely aroma that these oils produce, or even add to your food.

So if you are experiencing digestive issues, you are not alone, and in a way this a good thing. It means that because it is so common, there is a lot of research, knowledge and tools out there to help get it back on track.

The important takeaway is to make sure you are listening to your body (gut) so you do something about it before it becomes a bigger problem somewhere else in your body.
