Chocolate: Powerful Healing Food or Poison?
It's so fascinating when you get into the signatures of foods, and even today's scientific studies that clarify this ancient wisdom, and cacao is one of my favourite wholefoods to use medicinally.
Cacao, the basis of all chocolate, has been used as a medicinal plant all the way back to the ancient times.
It all started in Mesoamerica where the ancient Mayans and Aztecs used cacao as a sacred drink.
They found this drink to be invigorating, and it was shared knowledge that cacao was a mood enhancer, leading the ancients to believe that this was a sacred food.
The Mayans worshipped a god of cacao and reserved chocolate for rulers, warriors, priests and nobles at sacred ceremonies.
Fast forward to our modern world and chocolate has become one of the most commoditised, overly processed foods on our shelves today.
Big business has squandered the nutritional content of this healing food and loaded it with loads of sugar, milk powders and toxic chemicals that keep you addicted.
I've seen it happen time and time before, an ancient, healing wholefood taken by big business and completely warped: the result is POISON that makes them a ton of money.
I wouldn't touch 'mainstream' chocolate, even with a ten foot pole.
In saying that, I always have organic, cacao based chocolate in my pantry.
What's so interesting is that cacao has the Cannabinoid 9 in its nutritional components.
So when we eat chocolate it actually elevates our mood and emotions and helps to alleviate stress.
Your body knows what to eat
During times of stress and trauma how many of us turn to comfort food, namely chocolate?
Folks, that's not a design flaw. Your body knows what to eat to support your e-motions.
The catch is, when you buy that junk they sell at the supermarket, you're getting non of the benefits of cacao, but you're also getting a truckload of refined white sugar (poison) and toxic chemicals. Not to mention supporting slavery... Yikes!
If you love chocolate, the good news is there is so many delicious, raw, cacao based chocolates out there on the market.
The benefits of including chocolate into your diet
There are so many benefits for including a good quality chocolate in your diet, including:
- Chocolate is a great source of serotonin, dopamine, anandamide and phenylethylamine (PEA) - four well-studied neurotransmitters which are associated with feelings of wellbeing, happiness and emotional joy
- Chocolate can lower your blood pressure
- Chocolate (when cacao based) is full of anti-oxidants
- Chocolate can support people suffering depression and anxiety
- Chocolate can relieve the symptoms of PMS
Anyway folks, I encourage you to welcome a good quality, cacao based chocolate into your diet and watch the effects it has on your e-motions.
